As you probably know, the number of spelling mistakes in your IELTS Writing will affect your writing band score, and so it’s a good idea to check your writing for spelling mistakes at the end of the IELTS Writing test.

To help you find spelling mistakes in your IELTS Writing, here are three common types of IELTS spelling mistake that you should look for.

The Cambridge Learner Corpus is a huge collection of exam papers that experts use to highlight mistakes made by candidates.

Spelling mistake 2: words from the IELTS Writing Task that you’ve used in your writing

A second type of spelling mistake that I often see candidates make is misspelling words from the actual IELTS Writing task. To show you what I mean, here’s an IELTS Writing Task 2 question from the official IELTS website and a spelling mistake that I’ve seen a lot of students make.

The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace. Nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy.

The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

When answering this task, some students use the word ‘outweigh‘ in their answer but misspell it by adding a ‘t‘ on to the end and writing ‘outweight‘.

Spelling mistake 3: words that you often spell incorrectly in IELTS Writing

Other spelling mistakes that you should look for are words that you know you have misspelt before.

If you’ve got your test soon, it would be a good idea to make a list of your common spelling mistakes (and their corrections) to remind yourself of what spelling mistakes to look for in your writing.

For every spelling mistake you notice and correct in your IELTS Writing, you’re giving yourself a better chance of getting the band score you need.
